History of the Memorial Rose Garden
All good things must come to an end.
For nearly four decades, the Dodge City Area Women’s Chamber of Commerce Inc. Memorial Commemorative Rose Garden has stood as a symbol of beauty, remembrance, and community spirit. What began as the vision of the Beautification Committee became a labor of love—carefully researched, thoughtfully planned, and brought to life with the planting of the first rose in the spring of 1987.
Located on the Dodge City Community College campus along North 14th Avenue, the garden was formally dedicated on July 26, 1987, after years of fundraising, volunteer work, and unwavering community support. Each raised bed, filled with 5 to 10 rose bushes, told a story—honoring loved ones through commemorative and memorial plaques. With its peaceful setting, the garden became a place where visitors could sit, reflect, and simply pause to “smell the roses.”
Over the years, dedicated members of the Beautification Committee and countless volunteers lovingly maintained the garden, ensuring it remained a place of comfort and beauty for all.
However, as times change and life grows busier, and as many of the original caretakers reach a well-earned season of rest, the difficult decision has been made to bring this chapter to a close. With heavy hearts, the Women’s Chamber has chosen to retire the Rose Garden.
In partnership with Dodge City Community College, the roses and gazebo will not be lost. Instead, they are being thoughtfully relocated across the campus—allowing their beauty and meaning to continue, just in a new form and new spaces.
While it is hard to say goodbye to such a cherished place, we are deeply grateful for the years of support, dedication, and love from this community. The Rose Garden may no longer stand as it once did, but its spirit will continue to bloom in the memories it created and the lives it touched.
Thank you for helping make it so special.
